Primary Job Function:
The Counsel, Information Governance (“IG”) reports directly to the Director, Information Governance (“Director”) and will provide oversight and direction for the activities within the IG and records management function for Abbott globally. The Counsel is responsible for assisting the Director in developing numerous IG initiatives, including, but not limited to formulating IG and records policy and best practices and managing company’s information and data systems. This entails working with key stakeholders across organizational levels, divisions and countries to ensure critical practices are properly implemented, including:
Acting as a primary liaison and subject matter expert on IG and records management matters
Reviewing and identifying potential legal issues in connection with performance of the IG function, including regulatory, litigation, and privacy / cybersecurity issues
Promoting compliance with legal, regulatory, financial, and operational record keeping requirements (e.g., appropriate retention, defensible destruction)
Formulating strategy and developing plans to increase the value and visibility of information, records retention and data management and governance (e.g., analytics)
Communicating with other stakeholders within the organization re: IG initiatives, and projects
Providing management of key personnel and oversight of cost and risk reduction efforts (e.g., storage costs, eDiscovery processing, regeneration of information).
Core Job Responsibilities:
Responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies and procedures. Some of the Counsel’s responsibilities include:
Working closely with the Director to ensure that the IG programs govern multiple information assets, including hard-copy and electronic formats
Providing guidance to ensure that the IG and RIM programs are in full compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements in relevant jurisdictions
Helping to develop a company-wide comprehensive IG framework, accounting for various multijurisdictional laws, rules, and regulations
Working collaboratively with the IG and IT teams to develop strategies and procedures to ensure timely and accurate classification, confidentiality, privacy, security, retention and disposition of company information
Developing and overseeing the implementation of a strategic program applying industry leading practices and methodologies to support the achievement of short, medium and long-term goals
Developing and implementing the policies and guidelines for the management of all Abbott information
Building a systematic, methodical, and legally defensible practice to discard unneeded information
Selecting and leveraging technology to achieve efficiencies (e.g., auto-classification, analytics, deletion)
Providing IG and records management oversight during acquisition and divestiture activities
Managing the annual departmental budget and capital requirements
Position Accountability / Scope:
This position reports to the Director, Information Governance. It will manage 1-3 direct reports. It will interact with senior leadership across the company. Information governance is critical to satisfy information compliance requirements, manage information risks, increase IT efficiency, optimize information value, protect business assets and increase business profitability.
