Abbott’s nutrition business is an important part of the Abbott growth strategy, with almost $7Bn in sales in 2015. Due to the nature of the business, there are many external environmental considerations such as global and local regulations/legislation that frame the manner in which we operate our businesses. This legislation is changing at a dramatic pace, and it is essential that Abbott’s nutrition business remains competitive within this changing environment.
Development and implementation of a strategic, global external engagement strategy.
The position will report directly to the Head of Regulatory Affairs for Abbott’s Nutrition business with a dotted line reporting to a small core group which would include Public Affairs and Government Affairs.
In addition, the position will have significant exposure to Executive Leadership of Abbott’s nutrition business and require the individual to work cross functionally at senior levels.
The incumbent could be based either in our Columbus, OH or in our Lake County, IL location.

Develop and execute an external engagement strategy to ensure Abbott’s nutrition business (AN) is clearly positioned within a changing external environment:
Provide Executive Management with insight and strategic recommendations as to how AN should engage externally on shared goals around improving global nutrition and health outcomes.
Take a coordinating and oversight role for the critical workstreams that fall under the External Engagement umbrella relating to improving nutrition outcomes (currently 4 workstreams). Ensure each workstream is contributing to the overall external engagement strategy with set objectives and impact measurements.
Work collaboratively across all Abbott functions to identify and provide solutions to the key stakeholder issues relating to nutrition.
Play an active role to ensure Abbott develops strong relationships with key external stakeholders, including NGO’s/ advocacy groups, non-state actors, clinical groups and the general public (as appropriate).
Work with Global Citizenship, Country and Regional GA, Regulatory and Public Affairs to develop company positions and messaging that is aligned with Abbott goals and strategy.
Leverage talent and resources available across Abbott to provide leadership and execute on key projects.
As necessary work closely with affiliates to ensure they are able to understand, articulate and implement locally the company’s positions. Ensure a consistent global position is adopted by all affiliate and cross-functional groups.
Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional Policies and procedures.
KEY LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Exceptional communication (written and verbal) and influencing skills – able to develop, and clearly and effectively articulate, a company position. Must have strong inter-personal skills and the ability to communicate and build relationships with a wide range of different stakeholders, who have a wide range of interests and positions. This would include the ability to interface effectively with NGOs/ advocacy groups, non-state actors, senior government officials, dignitaries, major associations, key customers and Abbott Executive Management.
Experience of both Public Affairs and Government Affairs roles at a senior level ideally within a health care organization, and demonstration of communication skills in these roles.
Understanding of U.S. and international health care practices, systems, regulations and administrative processes.
Strong skill in understanding the needs of government and key customers, and the ability to identify appropriate activities to create interest, meet their needs, provide solutions while building trust and relationships.
Ability to develop strategies, communicate and persuade constituencies towards specific program actions and initiatives. Must be able to articulate these strategies to internal and external audiences.
Team player who can effectively build relationships both internally and externally, who is trusted by differing groups and who is easily and quickly accepted as an integral part of internal teams. Will need to have a balance of interpersonal, conceptual and analytical skills.
Work within Abbott’s corporate environment, understand and recognize the implications of AN strategy upon the broader corporation. In addition, the role may require implementation of cross-divisional, multi-faceted programs.
Ability to synthesize complex situations, facts, and circumstances down to the most salient factors and develop strategies relating to them whilst considering the broader picture.

Advanced degree in public policy, business or writing/communication would be preferred.
Post Graduate Business or MBA qualification would of value.
