Purpose of Role

The primary function of Section Manager, R&D, is to manage one to several departments within R&D.

Main Responsivities

Sets and re-sets project/process procedures, timelines, and priorities with appropriate executive management approval.

Establishes, develops and maintains cross-functional teams to support research and development processes and may identify opportunities for product and/or process improvements.

Interacts internally and externally with senior management requiring influence resource allocation, project prioritization and policy-making.

Has authority to make critical decisions affecting area of operation with financial/legal liability <$500M;

Acts as a functional area authority on technical issues.

Manages a staff of 3-25+ including senior level technical and/or scientific staff.

Provides a continuous flow of information and department results to higher management; communicates regularly with staff regarding expectations, priorities, business results and performance.

Responsible for departmental budgets, including employee travel, expenses, training and supplies. Budgets generally $500M-$2MM.

Establishes project procedures, rules and guidelines; approves exceptions and modifications within own area of responsibility.

Has responsibility for overall departmental operations, including purchasing, inventory, facilities, systems.

Education

PhD Degree in related scientific field

Experience/Background

Minimum 8 years - years of productive, progressive and relevant experience. Advanced research, clinical or industrial experience sufficient to demonstrate practical theoretical equivalency.

Minimum 5 years - If PhD: 2+ years of experience in academia/industry/post-doc.
