Abbott Ireland Nutrition Division – Cootehill
Abbott Nutrition in Cootehill manufactures infant nutritional products for the export markets. The facility is dedicated to providing products of the highest quality standard to its customers.
Abbott Nutrition produces a range of infant formulae in all pack sizes under the brand name “Similac”. To complement the range of “Similac” infant formulae, the facility also manufactures a range of follow on formulae under the brand name of “Gain”. The essential ingredient is liquid skim milk and this is combined with carbohydrate, vegetable oils, vitamins and minerals. The product is blended, pasteurised, dried and packaged at the site and once packaged, is distributed to Europe, South East Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Canada.
Established in 1975, Abbott Nutrition in Ireland is the largest powder manufacturing facility for the production of infant formulae within the Abbott Corporation worldwide.
Approximately 1,000 dairy farms in Ireland and Northern Ireland supply quality milk to the Cootehill facility which processes 500,000 litres per day. This secure supply together with Ireland’s reputation as a green, clean environment is of significant strategic importance to Abbott Nutrition.
We currently have a temporary vacancy for a EHS Specialist (Health & Safety) and this position will include the following:
Primary Function / Goals / Objectives
Follow all Environmental, Health and Safety Rules and Regulations in the plant.
Report any current or potential hazards to your manager immediately.
Wear the correct Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E.) at all times. Consult the appropriate SOP where required.
Lead, support and advise management on health & safety issues plant wide.
Co-ordinate health & safety documentation such as; safety environment, risk assessments, process safety reviews, industrial hygiene monitoring, loss prevention, inspections, health and safety reporting both internally and externally, accident investigation and training.
Assist with the management of the IPPC licence.
Drive continuous improvement in health & safety throughout the facility.
Develop the health and safety strategic plan for the business and playing an instrumental role in its implementation.
Comply with Abbott International EHS Technical Standards & Management Standards
Review Standards and implement any evident gaps.
Provide training support as per relevant standards and requirements.
Provide training to subject matter experts and training to plant with regard to EHS requirements as guided by division/corporate.
Participate in internal audits in Cootehill and sister plants as appropriate
Complete related projects as required.
This list of responsibilities may change depending on plant needs and employees are expected to be adaptable and flexible where this need arises.
The Health & Safety Manager will report to the OPEx & EHS Manager.
Ensure health and safety compliance with regulatory expectations and provide leadership and direction in these areas.
Advise and audit the compliance of health and safety legislation.
Ensure compliance with Abbott International EHS Technical Standards & Management Standards.
Responsible for health and safety reporting documentation as required by Division and Corporate.
Deputise for EHS Manager.
Education & Experience
- Educated to a degree level or higher in a health and safety or equivalent discipline with a minimum of four years relevant health and safety experience in a large manufacturing facility
Have a demonstrated ability to work on their own initiative, coupled with excellent organisational and strong leadership skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills and verbal/written communication skills.
Ability to work as an effective member of a high performance team.
Accountability / Scope
- This function will have the responsibility to ensure compliance with all regulatory and Abbott EHS regulations and the Irish Health & Safety legislation.
