In Ireland, Abbott employs more than 3,200 people across 11 sites. Abbott has six manufacturing facilities located in Clonmel, Cootehill, Donegal, Longford and Sligo and a third-party manufacturing management operation in Sligo. It has commercial operations in Dublin and shared services in Dublin and Westport. Abbott serves the Irish market with a diverse range of health care products including diagnostics, medical devices, nutritionals and branded generic pharmaceuticals. Abbott has been operating in Ireland since 1946.

Abbott Ireland Nutrition Division – Cootehill

Abbott Nutrition in Cootehill manufactures infant nutritional products for the export markets. The facility is dedicated to providing products of the highest quality standard to its customers.

Abbott Nutrition produces a range of infant formulae in all pack sizes under the brand name “Similac”. To complement the range of “Similac” infant formulae, the facility also manufactures a range of follow on formulae under the brand name of “Gain”. The essential ingredient is liquid skim milk and this is combined with carbohydrate, vegetable oils, vitamins and minerals. The product is blended, pasteurised, dried and packaged at the site and once packaged, is distributed to Europe, South East Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Canada.

Established in 1975, Abbott Nutrition in Ireland is the largest powder manufacturing facility for the production of infant formulae within the Abbott Corporation worldwide.

Approximately 1,000 dairy farms in Ireland and Northern Ireland supply quality milk to the Cootehill facility which processes 500,000 litres per day. This secure supply together with Ireland’s reputation as a green, clean environment is of significant strategic importance to Abbott Nutrition.

We are now looking for Process Engineer and this position will include the following:

Primary Function / Goals / Objectives

  • ·Follow all Health and Safety Rules and Regulations in the plant.

  • Maintain plant safety at the highest level with a zero accident target and with immediate response and thorough investigation and corrective action for all hazardous occurrences and accidents.

  • ·It is important that GMP is a main priority in any operation carried out in this job function.

  • ·The Process Project Engineer is responsible for consulting any SOP’s for any job task he/she may carry out and ensure they fully understand and adhere to the SOP.

  • ·Housekeeping is a critical function of all jobs and the Process Project Engineer is expected to ensure all process operators working under his/her supervision ensure housekeeping activities are observed and carried out appropriately. It is important that the Process Project Engineer is in adherence to the Housekeeping SOP.

  • Manage and co-ordinate projects within the Process Department and ensure all projects are carried out as per schedule.

  • Ensure that all personnel engaged in project work are fully familiar with and comply with their responsibilities under local, statutory or AI policies and procedures.

  • Review and update all relevant policies and procedures.

  • Assist Manufacturing Manager in preparation of capital budgets and aim to improve efficiencies and to be cost effective.

  • Support the manufacturing operation by standing in for Process Shift Managers when required.

  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives within the Process Department and participate in ongoing change and plant wide business excellence projects.

  • Maintain a positive employee relations atmosphere. Ensure that there is good communication and co-operation by encouraging knowledge sharing and open exchange of ideas within the Plant.

  • Provide Manufacturing Manager with status report of all projects, as required including KPIs.

  • Act as a SME (Subject Matters Expert) for specific tasks e.g. ER, CAPA Systems.

  • Participate in Personal Learning and Development.

  • Ensure continued implementation of the Performance Excellence initiative completing all goals, performance reviews and growth plans accordingly.

  • ·He/she must help establish with the Manufacturing Manager the departmental goals, schedules and timetables for activities.

  • ·Establish communication lines with all other departments e.g. Engineering, Q.A., Materials, Human Resources, Technical Operation Support and Finance.

  • ·Plan and schedule work in accordance with plant demand and available manpower.

  • ·Ensure all Abbott employees and contractors under his/her direction are fully familiar with all Safety Rules Regulations.

  • ·Ensure all efforts are made to reduce product cost by improving efficiencies.

  • ·Identify and implement CIPs within the Process Department.

  • This job function will change where update procedures to GMP, EHS, Technical/New Equipment, Quality procedures and SOPs are made.

Major Responsibilities

  • Manage and co-ordinate all projects in the Process Department, maintaining close liaison with managers in other departments with the aim of improving production efficiencies by means of a team approach.

  • Co-ordinate staff training and development on new projects in conjunction with the Learning and Development Manager.

  • Ensure compliance with Abbott policies and procedures, adherence to quality and efficiency goals and departmental budget performance.

  • Maintain compliance wire system.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

  • No direct reports (subject to change). Stands-in for Process Shift Managers and deputizes for the Manufacturing Manager as required.

Education Required:

  • Bachelors Degree in Food Science / Food Engineering or equivalent qualification.

Knowledge

  • Three years minimum experience in a food manufacturing industry.

  • Project management skills are essential.

  • High level of creativity and originality required in the design of new systems.

  • Ability to identify problems and address these using six sigma principles and continuous improvement techniques.

  • Ability to write clear and concise reports.

  • Good interpersonal /communication skills.

  • Good computer skills.

Accountability / Scope

  • Deviation from specification or failure to take corrective action or follow procedures for any period of time could have serious financial and quality consequences.

  • Where non-conformances occur in the Manufacturing Area this can lead to delays to the Process schedule and achievement of customer service goals
