The Mgr, AMD Operations Engineering provides leadership for this critical technical support function. Abbott Molecular Division (AMD) Operations Engineering contains multiple groups which include Facilities engineering, process engineering and validation. Develops long term strategies to meet division goals and support AMD Sites.

Primary Functions/Goals:

  1. Capital & Facilities Planning - Responsible for development and implementation of the AMD Manufacturing and Facilities Capital Plan including management of annual project expense cash flow. Provides facilities planning and oversight for Office; Lab & Manufacturing Space including the closure and/ or reallocation of space. Serves as primary contact with GES organizations as it relates to AMD Sites.

  2. Project Engineering – Manages all engineering projects for site. Also supports remediation activities during execution of the Qualification Master Plan for facilities; utilities; and key manufacturing equipment. Establishes project objectives and technical criteria for evaluating project results. Ensures project activities are aligned with the project objectives. Assures that all key stake-holders are aligned with project;

program; and are involved in major impact decisions.

  1. Oversees significant FUE shutdowns to insure completion of projects without negative impact on AMD Manufacturing. Provide key input to strategic operations initiatives.

  2. Facilities Inspection - Owns and manages facility program including inspections; corrective actions; and integration of the program into Quality and other IT Systems.

  3. Responsible for oversight of AMD Engineering/Maintenance which maintains the equipment for the manufacturing processes for; fermentation; filling; labeling; kit assembly and final distribution to the customer. In addition, the Engineering group has responsibility for supporting the Purified Water distribution systems used to support all of AMD Des Plaines Site. The Plant Engineering and Service Center assure the continuous uninterrupted manufacturing process of high quality diagnostic products 24 hours per day; 7 days per week.

This position ensures that state of the art equipment and techniques are utilized to increase the quality & efficiency of engineering and ongoing technical support for the site manufacturing operations.

Major Responsibilities:

Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system.

  1. Leadership: Manage the performance of multi-disciplined engineers; project managers; contractors. Responsible for recruiting; training; employee development; and performance management. Accountable for all projects assigned to each subordinate including design; cost estimates; and project implementation commitments. Coach & mentor individual employees and the entire staff to assure that best business decisions are made for AMD considering strategic direction and technical risk. Development and

implementation of the Capital Plan including funding; planning and implementation.

  1. Manage and coordinate the engineering services effort. Plans and manages HR growth and development. Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system including the strategic planning necessary to meet LRP quality goals.

  2. Design and documentation for all facilities; utilities; and equipment. Assure there is properly documented change control and that documents are compliant with FDA requirements.

  3. Project Management: Develop detailed scope descriptions; designs; cost estimates; and implementation strategies that support AMD ongoing base business; projects and execution of projects. Responsible for the successful completion of complex; cross-functional capital projects within the stated parameters of scope; budget and timeline while assuring that all regulatory requirements are met. Constantly monitor

and communicate changing project priorities to assure that efforts of the engineering staff are applied to the most important projects. Meet project commitments by analyzing workload and securing the necessary resources to meet upcoming requirements for engineering support in this area of expertise. Interface and negotiate with external agencies; consulting firms; construction contractors; equipment manufacturers; and

internal organizations (eg. Global Engineering Services) to complete projects effectively while representing the best interest of Abbott at all times.

  1. Improve customer service while ensuring compliance with FDA and GMP requirements.

  2. Interacts with a variety of technical managers; nontechnical managers; and engineers to provide leadership on issues such as design evaluation; standardization; engineering workstation tools/methodologies; project management; and product data management techniques.

  3. Financial: Develop and implement financial plan for engineering services. Forecast and justify budget; headcount; and capital requirements for the group. Manage departmental budgets. Prepare project cost estimates and justifications for both capital planning and the preparation of RCEs.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering (BSME; BSCHE; BSEE or related field) or Technical area. MBA preferred.

Project management experience and Lean Six Sigma desired.


Position requires 7 years of Engineering/Manufacturing/Technical experience in FDA regulated manufacturing environment including 3 years of leadership experience
