Primary Function / Primary Goals / Objectives:

The primary role and responsibility of the position is to enable the achievement of commercial objectives by conceiving and supporting training systems solutions for the Global Commercial business.

The manager must lead and coordinate many of the training systems-related activities that impact commercial activities globally including sales; marketing; customer phone support; and technical service. This is done through effective planning; design; implementation and technical support. This may require the coordination of resources from Area training; Abbott corporate and divisional IT and HR; GSMS; and third party vendors and contractors. The scope includes directing design and development standards for all electronic content for delivery and tracking via Learning Management System applications relevant to global sales; service; customer support; and external customers. The manager must oversee on-line curricula standards; processes; deployments; and metrics reporting for a complex population of system clients; including all commercial employees.

Core Job Responsibilities:

Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system.

  1. Partner with Global Training management to promote and support business objectives; plans; and

opportunities through use of training systems and technologies; Recommend system solutions; in conjunction with Abbott IT where appropriate. This position is responsible for supporting the projects and systems that fall within these areas. Work with vendors and cross-divisional training organizations to gain knowledge of available electronic training solution offerings to determine fit into the business strategy. Ensure alignment between training organization business units; established training systems; and IT.

  1. Manage the development; validation; implementation and maintenance of training systems as the business system owner. Collaborate with IT organizations and area stakeholders to define scope; deploy; and provide local support of resultant systems. Manage vendor Master Service Agreement processes; contract negotiations; and vendor relations. Effectively manage and support the installed systems through a combination of solutions: direct support; via area personnel; via 3rd party or vendor consultants; or via Service Level Agreement creation/management with appropriate global or area IT organizations. Regardless of the support strategy chosen; manage the aggregate cost of the support efforts for maximum benefit to the Global Training and Commercial organizations.

  2. Manage the personnel resources of Training Systems directly and interact with other organizations as

required to achieve the results. This may include management of direct headcount and

contractors/consultants; and indirect management of training administrators and coordinators around the globe.

  1. Evaluate and report on business impact of learning initiatives to division management.

  2. Define on-line curricula design; deployment; and tracking strategies and on-line translation management strategies for electronically deployed training programs within the global commercial population. Define and manage resultant global curricula and translation management processes/procedures and documentation/training to support. Manage communication and training for global support/admin teams per system support strategy.

  3. Position is responsible for development and management of department systems budget (approx. $175M).

Position Accountability / Scope:

Position reports to Director level and has responsibility for departmental technology and licensing budget. The position has regular direct contact with global management teams (Country Managers / GMs; Regional Directors) for purpose of reporting training metrics and managing training completions; and interacts daily with area training managers in all aspects of technology-based trainings. The position has frequent contact with cross-divisional system owners and IT managers. The position manages the relationships and negotiations with external vendors for system implementations and enhancements. Travel: 15%

Minimum Education:

Bachelor's level degree required. Degree and experience in education; instructional design; business; or

computer science is a plus. International experience or credentials is a plus.

Minimum Experience / Training Required:

  • Knowledge of regulations and standards affecting IVDs and Biologics.

  • Experience in leading organizational change in complex systems.

  • Experience in measuring business impact of educational programs in support of sales / service / external

  • customer business strategies

  • Experience in managing large scope initiatives, projects or systems for commercial organization.

  • Knowledge of functions, features and potential application of electronic systems for delivery and management

  • of training to a remote and distributed organization.

  • Knowledge and skills necessary to develop, direct and influence training and organizational development

  • system strategies - leadership, strategic planning, business development, financial planning, resource

  • analysis/projections and compliance knowledge.

  • Excellent project management skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.

  • Experience in translation processes and management.

  • Experience in software life cycle management and system validation/verification.

  • High level of oral and written communication skills required. Presentations (business problems/solutions,

  • cost/benefit analysis, budgeting, etc.) to division management, to sister division management and possibly to

  • vendors are necessary; this requires strong and effective communications and presentation skills.

  • Ability to manage direct and indirect staff across multiple languages, geographies, and time zones is a must.
