Main Responsibilities:

Productively Responsible for packaging and molded commodity vendor and supplier relationships to assure a technical partnership and a favorable business relationship.

Design and documentation for all manufacturing production lines to assure there is properly documented change control and documents are compliant with regulatory agency requirements.

Staffing and development of professional packaging, mechanical, controls and molding engineers for product design equipment automation and testing.

Maintain worldwide database for molds and molding capacities to assure reliable, high quality plastic commodities and finished product.

Creatively modify equipment designs to reduce costs based on new/revised equipment both within Abbott facilities and at molding vendor sites.

Proactively work with global packaging and molding vendors to reduce costs and reduce the environmental waste associated with plastics.


$5-8MM annual budget for purchasing new molds/dies (total value of ADD’s molds exceeds $75MM). $50MM+ budgetary responsibility (annual purchases of plastic molded parts). $2-4MM annual capital budget for equipment/automation projects.

No agency warning letters for equipment change control or documentation problems.

Drives low customer complaints due to production assembly defects, broken parts or visual damage to plastic parts/assemblies.

Established the Strategic Direction for Assay Products in ADD: Study Regulatory and Consumer trends with regards to Environmental Impact of Plastics (i.e. ,plastics, recycling, lead elimination, etc.) and develop alternate material solutions to gain competitive advantage.

Participate with recognized industry groups to stay current with latest available automation for manufacturing, plastic resins and molding practices.

Develops and implements strategies that insure organization alignment with current business strategies (i.e., integration of OEM/Acquisition strategy). Maintain working relationships with University level professionals to assure linkage to upcoming technology and for unique problem solving.


Bachelors degree. Bachelors degree in Engineering preferred (Packaging /Automation/Molding Engineering). Position requires 10-15 years of Engineering in an agency regulated manufacturing environment including 3-5 years of program/department managerial experience. Work experience could include up to 5 years of product or packaging development experience instead of Engineering. Experience utilizing financial modeling/forecasting to support decision making (cost of product and capital investments) and budgetary responsibility. Demonstrated diplomatic professional skill necessary to effectively function in a multi-site, multi-business matrix environment
