Abbott Sr. Scientist, Sample Prep and IVD Consumable Development in San Diego, California

Abbott Rapid Diagnostics (formerly Alere) is part of Abbott’s Diagnostics family of businesses, bringing together exceptional teams of experts and industry-leading technologies to support diagnostic testing which provides important information for treatment and management of diseases and other conditions.

Abbott has developed a novel point-of-care in vitro molecular diagnostic platform, the ID NOW, based on its proprietary isothermal nucleic acid amplification technology (iNAT). The ID NOW is capable of detecting a DNA or RNA target in less than fifteen minutes with exquisite sensitivity and specificity. On-market assays include those for COVID-19, flu, RSV, and Strep A.

Abbott is currently looking for a dynamic individual who will provide molecular diagnostic biochemistry experience and expertise to develop the next generation consumable for the ID NOW instrument, facilitating expansion of the test menu to additional analytes and more challenging clinical matrices.

IVD Consumable Development – Sr. Scientist: perform studies focused on biochemistry and technology development, including the design, screening and optimization of novel sample preparation, as well as expanding the capabilities of the core technology.

Responsibilities

  • Independently plan, design and execute experiments while troubleshooting and solving problems

  • Independently analyze data, interpret results, and suggest next experiments

  • Effectively analyze and communicate results in oral and written form

  • Perform research related to improving and expanding core technology capabilities

  • Optimize sample preparation coupled to the iNAT’s core technology

  • Utilize technical proficiency in molecular techniques

  • Investigate problem areas and areas of desirable product improvement

  • Provide feedback to engineers to improve consumable design

  • B.S./M.S. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering or a closely related field with a minimum of 4 years (B.S.) or 2 years (M.S.) of full-time laboratory experience in an industrial setting

  • Hands-on nucleic acid amplification and detection technologies experience

  • Experience with nucleic acid sample preparation methods, including rapid technologies and various clinical matrices

  • Experience with IVD consumable development

  • Experience with clinical samples using molecular diagnostic technologies

  • Comprehension of scientific literature and terminology

  • Appreciation for engineering

  • Inventive, with ability to implement ideas in the laboratory

  • Ability to work as part of a cross-functional team composed of engineers, scientists, and other specialists

  • Problem-solving skills combined with analytical skills and good attention to detail

  • Adaptable to rapidly changing goals and deadlines

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Requirements

  • B.S./M.S. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering or a closely related field with a minimum of 4 years (B.S.) or 2 years (M.S.) of full-time laboratory experience in an industrial setting
