Serve as the Optics engineering expert with emphasis on electro-optics within the Abbott Hematology Diagnostics Business. Responsible for the development of optical sub-systems in new products and for on market product optical subsystem improvements and issue resolution. Focus is on electro-optics, such as light sources or detectors and corresponding drive circuitry. Reports to the Chief Optical Architect. Leads technical teams comprised of internal resources and vendors.

  • Responsible for the optics of all products developed at Abbott Hematology. This includes support of optics development during the feasibility, product development through product launch and optics of on market products

  • Experience with flow cytometry is preferred

  • Contributes directly to the development of optics requirements based on customer needs and systems-requirements

  • Proven track record of optical system design, working with optical and electro-optical components and their circuitry.

  • Knowledge in Mie scatter theory is a plus

  • Intimate knowledge of laser physics and detector/sensor physics.

  • Familiar with error budgeting, tolerance stack-up analysis, and manufacturability requirements

  • Specifies and selects lasers and other light sources, detectors, fiber optics.

  • Selects; builds and maintains the most appropriate vendor partnerships. Evaluates vendor reliability and performance ensuring adherence to plans; policies; and procedures to provide required products or services. Actively manages vendors.

  • Establishes collaborative relationships in a functional matrix environment. Leads a multiple-discipline; cross-functional to make good decisions regarding (optical) design; materials; manufacturability; quality; costs; regulatory compliance; intellectual property; and strategic fit within the product portfolio.

  • Advances engineering expertise. Mentors and trains functional leaders. Sets discipline strategy in alignment with functional goals and key engineering objectives.

  • Ensures quality and effectiveness of key results of major project plans within function through sound design; early risk assessments; and implementation of fallback strategies.

  • Presents engineering concepts and results for function engineering and non-engineering leaders as well as potential and existing partners. Maximizes impact and value of expertise.

  • Develops strong awareness of other disciplines/subsystems’ dependencies and challenges to appropriately modify own strategy and performance goals to avoid performance tradeoffs.

  • Sources and identifies emerging trends from multiple internal and external sources. Assesses relevance. Determines use of innovation. Integrates trends into functional short-term objectives.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree in engineering,science or closely related discipline with eight or more progressive work experience. 8 or more years of progressive development work experience. Knowledge of regulations and standards affecting IVDs and Biologics

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10 years engineering experience in medical device products using optical technologies. Experience in IVD industry preferred.

  • Proven track record of bringing optical designs from concept to volume production, including optical modeling optimization, optical drawing generation, rapid prototyping, laboratory set-ups of prototypes, or verification testing on optical subsystems.

  • Proven experience as a technical subject matter expert in resolving on market product optical issues

  • Experienced, working with external component manufactures to design, launch and improve vendor subsystems used in production

  • Proficiency in optical design modeling software for ray tracing and non-sequential design, such as Zemax, or Lighttools, etc. Proficiency in engineering tools such as Solidworks, Matlab and LabView is highly desirable.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Optical, or Electrical Engineering, or related field. Advanced degree preferred

Success Factors

  • 10 years engineering experience in medical device products using optical technologies. Experience in IVD or Flow Cytometry industry preferred

  • Broad physics or systems background preferred

  • Excellent at troubleshooting, DMAIC or six-sigma education is a plus

  • Proven track record of bringing optical designs from concept to volume production, including optical modeling optimization, optical drawing generation, rapid prototyping, laboratory set-ups of prototypes, or verification testing on optical subsystems.

  • Proven experience as a technical subject matter expert in resolving on market product optical issues

  • Proven track record of working with external component manufactures to design, launch and improve vendor subsystems used in production

  • PhD in Physics, Optical Engineering, or related field
