Abbott Medical Devices is seeking a Senior Counsel for its Vascular Business Unit. The ideal candidate will have strong and demonstrated leadership and communication skills, diverse contracting and transactional experience, the ability to work in a team setting, and the experience or flexibility to advise on issues in multiple areas of law. The Senior Counsel may supervise staff.
Works with Division Counsel and other Senior Counsels to develop and implement legal programs that ensure the business in equipped with the legal guidance, contracts, tools, and solutions to execute the business objectives of the Vascular Business Unit in an effective and legally-compliant manner.
Advises key business and legal leaders on issues of concern to Abbott.
Provides transactional capabilities, including drafting contracts and advising on legal matters related to such transactions.
Resolves legal issues, provides proactive legal advice and manages high risk, high complexity matters under guidance of more senior attorneys.
Anticipates internal/external business and regulatory issues and provides applicable legal advice.
Communicates legal advice to internal clients.
Communicates with third parties such as regulators, outside counsel, parties to negotiations.
Reviews laws, cases, rules, regulations, releases and requirements.
Reviews and drafts legal documents and provides input.
Revises documents; drafts new language for documents when appropriate.
Supervises/manages outside counsel on select matters.
Supervises and reviews the work of Counsel as and when needed.
Performs other related duties and responsibilities, on occasion, as assigned.
Assists with US and international compliance initiatives.
Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree and be licensed to practice in any state.
Excellent academic credentials and a history of success in complex and challenging legal matters.
7+ years of legal experience in the medical device or related industries with demonstrated experience advising all levels of clients on a wide variety of legal issues of interest to Abbott, including commercial, legal regulatory, research and development, and clinical matters, and a strong commercial contracting background.
A demonstrated understanding of the laws, regulations, standards, and guidance governing the conduct of a medical device company.
Strong communication skills. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to be persuasive in reinforcing the best interests of the company.
Experience successfully representing and managing the legal affairs of a business having international operations. A global perspective and prior international experience is required.
A demonstrated ability to be an effective leader within a legal department, with a focus on developing talent.
Leadership and ability to see and handle more than the legal issues of a project; strong, pragmatic business acumen with the ability to recognize the business consequences of legal advice; a strategic and innovative thinker who can develop and articulate a clear understanding of the company’s strategy from all perspectives and find creative solutions to complex legal problems. Must be able to move easily between a hands-on, operations-focused view and a strategic outlook.
Effective communicator, particularly when it comes to discussing legal matters with internal clients.
Ability to build collaborative relationships with leaders and co-workers at all levels.
Strong project management skills and attention to detail.
Experience working in a broader enterprise/cross division business unit model preferred.
Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business model.
Ability to work effectively within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced changing environment -- multi-tasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and task follow-up skills.
Adept at handling multiple assignments in a timely manner and meeting assigned deadlines.
Ability to travel domestically and internationally (approximately 10%).
Must be able to maintain regular and predictable attendance.
