Responsible for the development of mechanical, opto-mechanical, and electro-mechanical sub-systems in new products and for on market product improvements and issue resolution. Reports to the Director of HW Engineering. Hands-on manager, leads technical teams comprised of internal and external resources, covering the competencies of general mechanical engineering / BOM management, mechatronics/robotics, and opto-mechanical design.

Primary Job Function:

Hands-on manager, responsible for the technical management of R&D, hardware engineering personnel, covering the competencies of general mechanical engineering / model-based BOM management, mechatronics/robotics, and opto-mechanical design. Defines and manages strategic system(s) definition, design, design risk reduction, implementation, verification and validation of future or derivative instrumentation. Defines and manages department budgets, HR merit increases and promotions. Defines R&D scope, staffing and budget guidelines for feasibility and development phases of systems development programs.

Core Job Responsibilities :

  • Leads a team of HW engineers, that develops, designs, and evaluates mechanical, opto-mechanical and electro-mechanical materials, components, assemblies, processes and/or equipment for IVD, flow cytometry instrumentation

  • Manages subordinate managers and/or senior employees who exercise significant latitude and independence

  • Develops engineering budgets and capital plans

  • Establishes operating policies and procedures that affect department and subordinate sections

  • Plans, organizes, and leads all aspects of a project regarding budgeting, staffing, communication and conflict resolution

  • Establishes external contact with other engineering companies and professional organizations to evaluate best practices in organizational design, product development, and technological trends

  • Expert domain knowledge in high-precision mechanical, and opto-mechanical engineering.

  • Proven experience in which optics such as lenses, mirrors, and prisms are mounted into opto-mechanical mounts and integrated into optical instrumentation.

  • Proven experience taking ideas from concept to production launch of medical opto-mechanical products.

  • Proven experience with opto-mechanical tolerance stack up management.

  • Contributes directly and influences the development of opto-mechanical requirements based on customer needs and systems-requirements

  • Expertise with robotics, precision stages, automation, vibration isolation and precision mechanical designs of complex systems in the areas of automated test equipment, test automation design and optical and vision systems development is advantageous

  • Proficient with Engineering design, control and analysis tools, such as Solidworks, Team Center, SBM, SAP, ANSYS, MATLAB, COSMOS, etc.

  • Thermal management and structural design experience at component and subsystem levels

  • Proficiency in technical management of suppliers. Excellent collaboration with internal and external suppliers and customers

  • Proficiency in technical project management—developing, documenting, and executing work streams in support of multiple projects. Works cross-functionally to provide technical support

  • Proficient in communicating complex technical situations in an understandable way

  • Flexibility where changes in the business environment dictate changes in direction as we develop new technical solutions

  • Strategic, multi-disciplined thinker who defines overall system design and prioritizes engineering technical risks in developing new systems

  • Builds a high-performance organization

  • Cultivate excellent working relationships with outside Abbott partners and then ensure effective communication and problem solving (including people/personality issues)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Four year degree in technical or scientific discipline (Post graduate degree preferred)

  • Eight plus years industry experience, at least three in a managerial or supervisory role

  • Experience with complex systems development, architecture, software or system integration

  • Understands engineering standards, FDA regulation, performance confirmation methods and development practices within Abbott, or in a comparable environment outside of Abbott (i.e. DOD, Aerospace, etc.)

  • Must have project management experience including managing multiple projects

  • Works well with other engineers in a collaborative, fast paced goal-driven environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • 15 years engineering experience in medical device products using optical and opto-mechanical technologies.

  • Advanced degree preferred

  • Experience in IVD industry and/or flow cytometry preferred.

  • Proven track record of bringing opto-mechanical and optical designs from concept to volume production, including optical, opto-mechanical modeling optimization, optical drawing generation, rapid prototyping, laboratory set-ups of prototypes, or verification testing on optical and opto-mechanical subsystems.

  • Proven experience as a technical subject matter expert in resolving on market product opto-mechanical l issues

  • Proven track record of working with external component manufactures to design, launch and improve vendor subsystems used in production
