Primary Job Function:

Provide Operational leadership and guidance for screening, evaluating, and executing deal activity within EPD in the assigned region. Responsible for operational and contractual assessment of deals as they apply to EPO (supply continuity, cost of goods, in-house manufacturing potential). Suggest and investigate potential opportunities that will provide tax savings for Abbott and/or fill available manufacturing capacity during the term of a licensing relationship. Lead cross-functional project teams to review in-licensing, out-licensing, co-marketing and divestiture opportunities that EPD Licensing & Acquisitions is actively pursuing. Negotiate operational terms in licensing and divestiture contracts.

Under direction of management, lead operations engagement in local company acquisition opportunities (in region of responsibility), assessing risk and potential impact to EPO manufacturing strategy and capabilities.

Provide support to Regional Operations lead on supply related issues and projects as needed in support of regional sales objectives.

Core Job Responsibilities:

Represent EPO in all deal activity in the assigned region. Evaluate proposed contractual relationships with external parties to source molecules for the EPD portfolio through the following types of contractual relationships:

  • In-licensing of products

  • Distribution agreements

  • Divestitures

  • Product Acquisitions

  • Local Company Acquisitions (with support of direct management)

Lead Operations and Quality subject matter experts to perform due diligence activities, identifying operations /quality related business risk. Work closely with regulatory affairs, legal, corporate business development to appropriately model launch timelines, product costs, and geographic expansion potential.

Responsible for following for each potential deal:

Diligence: assemble fit for purpose due-diligence teams, drive execution of diligence activities, and direct the team to make a final recommendation for each deal opportunity, appropriately identifying known and unknown risks.

Product Flow / Financial Flow: this position is responsible for understanding the EPD distribution model in their region, identifying the impact of newly sourced products on tax and sourcing models, and determining appropriate product flow and financial flow for each deal.

Contract Negotiation: negotiate all contractual terms related to the supply and quality of product obtained via deal activity in the assigned region. Work closely with legal function to appropriately mitigate risks identified during due diligence through appropriate contractual requirements and language.

Integration after close: this position is the key link between external deals / sourcing of molecules for the Playbook and the New Product Introduction (NPI) process and is responsible for integrating all executed deals into the NPI function, with particular emphasis on launch preparations within Supply Chain organization.

When supporting divestiture activity, must gather product intelligence from within the Abbott / EPD organization in a confidential manner. Responsible for creating electronic data room with quality, technical and supply chain information and answering diligence questions from potential buyers.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree in business or technical field. MBA desirable due to the skills required to financially assess impact on operations and understand the analysis/assumptions that Corporate BD uses in the deals.

Minimum Experience/Training Required:

A mixture of supply chain experience, manufacturing know-how, and business experience:

8-10 years’ pharma manufacturing & supply chain combined experience. (1-2 of the years desired in a program management role.)

Contractual experience desired (procurement, Third Party Manufacturing, distribution). Must be able to handle large volumes of confidential data and be able to determine how and when to inform management of risks and issues. Must be adaptable to changing priorities and fluid work environments.

Good negotiation and communication skills are mandatory – requires a proven ability to influence others. Requires the ability to understand the impact of business development decisions and contractual language on the Operations organization. Must negotiate internally and externally to influence deal outcomes to ensure rapid product launches and ongoing product supply.

Candidate must have proven to be adaptable and self-directed in order to constantly evaluate his/her own workload for changing priorities and adjust accordingly.

The EPD deal process is fast paced and dynamic, and this position requires individuals who can both understand and execute against the division growth strategy, and also become a subject matter expert in the details of Operations contracting.
