Abbott Senior Manufacturing Engineer - Ventures Trans-Catheter Mitral Valve in St. Paul, Minnesota

Position Summary:

We are recruiting for a Senior Manufacturing Engineer-Ventures Trans-Catheter Mitral Valve to join our team in St. Paul, MN. This is a unique opportunity to join an early-stage development team that provides solutions to patients suffering from mitral valve disease. The position is on a fast-paced, early product development team within Abbott’s Ventures Organization. You will support the operations team as a front-line engineer working with assemblers and troubleshooting equipment and process issues. Additionally, you will manage projects aimed towards designing and developing manufacturing processes, tooling, and fixtures to meet daily production schedules, while enhancing productivity and product quality. You will have the unique opportunity to make a mark on the organization as a leader, while working on state-of-the-art product.

Will perform this job in a quality system environment. Failure to adequately perform tasks can result in noncompliance with governmental regulations.

Cognitive Skills: Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Has a sound knowledge of various technical alternatives and their impact.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Front line manufacturing engineer with manufacturing line ownership

  • Researches, develops, designs, and evaluates mechanical and electro-mechanical materials, components, assemblies, processes and/or equipment

  • Run design of experiments studies to characterize process to improve yield and efficiency

  • Coach, mentor, and provide guidance to other engineers and technicians

  • Manage projects which include new production equipment, process improvements and cost reductions while supporting new product introductions

  • Conduct process FMEAs and process validations

  • Improve product quality, labor efficiency, and throughput through the use of Lean manufacturing concepts

  • Coordinate the design, procurement, build, and debug of tooling, machinery, and test equipment

  • Work with Product Development to ensure design for manufacture

  • Support all Company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.

  • Ensure compliance with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments. Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors.

  • Lead cross functional NCMR and CAPA teams to drive improvements.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical, Industrial, or Mechanical Engineering, or other related discipline

  • 6+ years manufacturing engineering experience in medical device chemical, petroleum, chemical compounding, or related industry, including working on and documenting process improvement initiatives

  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization

  • Previous experience working in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment

  • Strong analytical, problem solving and project management skills

  • Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

  • Ability to travel approximately 10%, including internationally

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced technical degree

  • Medical device experience

  • Previous trans-catheter tissue heart valve experience

  • Lean 6 Sigma Black Belt certification
