We are seeking an experienced, high caliber Senior Research and Development Engineer. The Senior R&D Engineer will be responsible for designing an innovative catheter based device for the PHP program. This position requires a strong mechanical design background and hands-on involvement in order to efficiently prototype and evaluates design concepts. The Senior Design Engineer will take the lead to ensure that the device, including materials, components, processes, and acceptance activities, properly documented, and project management. This position will act as a mentor for less experienced staff, leading problem solving activities and developing intellectual property.

Impact this role will have on Abbott:

  • Designs innovative catheter based medical device which meets user needs using 3D modeling and stress analysis tools

  • Develops processes required to fabricate the device

  • Designs tools and fixtures required to assist in device Manufacturing

  • Coordinates manufacturing of Next Generation prototypes

  • Works with product development team to develop test plan

  • Participates in failure analysis and corrective action activities in order to determine design modification

  • Performs Tolerance Analysis to create specifications for both the components and final device

  • Participates in cross functional activities (i.e. risk analysis, supplier development, CAPA)

  • Mentors less experienced staff

  • Creates intellectual property

  • Project management

Your experience(s), education and knowledge will further expand Abbott's market place success:

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Mechanical/Electrical/BioMedical preferred) plus 6+ years of design engineering experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)

  • Experience through all phases (from product conception through commercialization) as a member of medical device product development team

  • Five years’ experience as design engineer in catheter based medical devices, including demonstration of competence in 3D modeling of components and assemblies

Your preferred qualifications and education:

  • Strong Mechanical Analysis Background

  • Experience with 3D modeling (SolidWorks, ProEngineering)

  • Knowledge of Materials used in Medical Devices.

  • Good overall knowledge of machining and plastic injection molding

  • Strong project management skills

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Experience with medical device standards (QSR, ISO)

  • Proven ability to work independently to research and resolve technically issues
